SHANE GABIER - IMAGINARY BUILDINGS
SHANE GABIER - IMAGINARY BUILDINGS
Imaginary Buildings is a document of the work of artist Shane Gabier who has embarked on his new creative chapter making ceramics in the last few years. Formerly the co-creator of fashion line Creatures of the Wind, Gabier has turned his design eye towards interiors and home goods. Creating hand built ceramics as if he was constructing a building, each piece feels both new and old living in a familiar landscape of modern design all the while maintaining a functionality to each piece.
40 page full color catalog that comes with a two sided newspaper broadsheet that features a ceramic furniture piece on one side and sketchbook pages on the other.
BIO - Shane Gabier is a designer and artist who lives in and works in New York City.
A graduate of design, fashion, and architecture from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Shane focused on clothing design until 2017, when he began to design and produce furniture and lighting. As an independent exploration, he began to work in clay in 2018, first developing functional pieces on the wheel, and in 2020 began to construct sculptural, hand-built forms, both functional and non-functional.
His current body of work is focused on the study of form, color, and texture, and pairs utilitarian functionality with ornamental design, informed by modernism, 1970s psychedelia, and Brutalist architecture. Most of the work is built from a textured, dark red sculpture clay, with select pieces made from a smooth black clay.
Shane is one of the founders of Creatures of the Wind, a ready-to-wear clothing label that was established in 2008. He designed Creatures with his partner Christopher Peters, and together the two have collected industry awards and titles from the Vogue/CFDA Fashion Fund, CFDA Fashion Awards, Business of Fashion, LVMH Prize, and WWD.
